Japanese Tea Garden

Brief Overview of Japanese Tea Garden

Nestled in Brackenridge Park, the Japanese Tea Garden is a historic landmark that spans 11 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds. Beloved by locals and tourists, the garden offers a peaceful retreat with its layered landscapes, a stunning 60-foot waterfall, tranquil koi ponds, and a charming pagoda-style pavilion. Open every day and free to enter, it’s an ideal escape for unwinding, snapping beautiful photos, or enjoying a quiet, romantic walk.

The History and Story of Japanese Tea Garden

The Japanese Tea Garden has a fascinating history, starting in 1917, when city officials transformed an abandoned limestone quarry into a sunken garden. Winning walkways, stone bridges, and lily ponds were created using prison labor and donated materials. Local Japanese-American artist Kimi Eizo Jingu and his family were invited to live on-site as caretakers and opened the Bamboo Room to serve tea and light lunches.

During World War II, anti-Japanese sentiment led to the eviction of the Jingu family, and the garden was renamed the “Chinese Tea Garden.” Decades later, efforts to restore its original name succeeded in 1984, honoring its historical roots. From 2006 to 2008, extensive renovations revitalized the garden with improved walkways, floating islands, and water-recirculation systems for the koi ponds. Today, it is both a cultural treasure and a peaceful retreat for all who visit.
