San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site, safeguards four remarkable Spanish colonial missions—Concepción, San José, San Juan, and Espada. The story of the San Antonio Missions began in 1718 when Spanish missionaries founded Mission San Antonio de Valero (later known as the Alamo). These missions served as self-sufficient communities with churches, workshops, irrigation systems, and farmland.
By the late 1700s, the missions transitioned from religious outposts to thriving communities that laid the groundwork for modern-day San Antonio.
