The origins of the San Antonio Zoo date back to the late 19th century when animals were displayed in San Pedro Park. In 1914, Colonel George W. Brackenridge laid the foundation for today’s zoo in Brackenridge Park by donating land and a remarkable collection of animals, ranging from buffalo and elk to monkeys, lions, and bears. Over time, the zoo became a pioneer in cageless exhibits with the opening of Primate Paradise and Barless Bear Terraces in 1929. The Richard Friedrich Aquarium was added in 1948, followed by iconic features like the Hixon Bird House in 1966.
Today, the zoo is renowned for its commitment to conservation and education, as well as innovative exhibits that recreate natural habitats for its animals.
